As we get used to writing the 3 in 2013 for the next few weeks and decide how we are going to maintain our New Year's resolutions without defaulting, let's turn our focus on the foundation.  As religious as you may or may not be, an excerpt from the bible gives a powerful visualation for the premise of my message.

Matthew 7:24-27 - "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mind and puts them into practice (referring to the Words of God) is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the steams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the steams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house, and it fell with a great crash."

Take a step back and think about your own foundation for a second.  Do you know what it looks like?  Can you tell whether it is built on rock or sand?  Take a look at the picture at the top of the blog.  This house, although it looks very nice on the outside and is surrounded by beautiful scenery, cannot withstand the powerful elements of Earth.  I believe that first when considering upgrading our foundation, we should look inwardly.  Start with your soul and your  mind.  Since I am not a psychologist or a pastor, I will not try to preach or to give you a formula for mental enrichment.  What I can do, is provide you with a way to find peace of mind when it comes to the place you call home.

We can get through our lives on a day to day basis, even if we are just barely hanging on by a thread, but when we experience the worlds elemental and social power we can fall victim to disasters that we are not well prepared for.  Read the following statistics, they speak for themselves:

- Over 1,000 homes are destroyed by tornadoes each year
- Over 300,000 homes were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy
- Over 350,000 house fires were reported last year

Most of these people were prepared by having a homeowners policy that covered these disasters, but not everyone in the U.S. carries homeowenrs insurance.  Roughly 4% of homes in the U.S. are uninsured (
click for details).  Since the U.S. has approximately 125 million homes, that means 5 million homes exist without insurance.  You may be reading this and thinking, I already have insurance so this doesn't help me at all.  Well, let me see if I can find something that may interest you.

So, you have homeowners insurance.  That's great!  What are you covered for?  Do you know anything about your loss benefits?  What is your deductible?  Sure, you get a policy from your insurance company that gives all of the details of what your insurance policy contains, but have you taken the time to read it?  You may be getting exactly what you paid for.  The average homeowners policy ranges from $300 - $1,500 depending on where you live, what your credit rating is (not the same as a credit score), your age, among other factors.  The thing about the cost of homeowners insurance that many people don't understand, is that some insurance agents will take away some important coverages in order to meet your "cost requirements".  Try to take the time to figure out whether your have an inexpensive homeowenrs policy or a cheap homeowners policy.

That is it for today.  Tomorrow, I will be dissecting a homeowners policy to point out what is important and what you can do without.  As always, if you have any questions, feel free to comment or send me an email.
